Every airline's rules are different and constantly changing, but it's likely that at some point. Someone on your flight will ask you to put your phone on airplane mode.

Airplane mode or flight mode temporarily suspends signals and WiFi, even as the rest of the device remains fully functional. Switching to airplane mode will save battery power on your device.

One of the reasons by airlines is to keep the plane communication uninhibited. Our phones are sending and receiving signals in the form of radio waves. Even when you are not connected to the internet, your cell is looking for the nearest towers and trying to find the strongest wi-fi connection. While our phones aren't going to make the plane stop working or cause a crash landing, but it can make the pilot's job difficult. Especially during take-off and landing - When the pilot concentrates most, the radio waves can make it hard or even impossible to communicate with towers on the ground, and that's important for safe flight.

Mobile phones are distracting, they draw people away from paying attention to safety procedures during the briefing and the perception that you are using your phone, can cause unnecessary alarm or can disturb fellow travelers. 

The smart thing to do is to follow airline instructions in regards to using flight mode or leaving your phone on as usual.
